Celebrating the life of a legendary physician

At an event held this past fall, Dr. Laura Fine and Dr. James Hung unveiled a portrait of the late A. Robert Bellows, MD, in the Boston office, to celebrate the tremendous impact Dr. Bellows had on OCB and the field of ophthalmology. OCB colleagues, including OCB Founder Dr. Albert Frederick, and family members gathered to pay tribute to Dr. Bellows, a dynamic and brilliant mentor and friend to many here at OCB.

Dr. Bellows was integral to OCB’s recognition on the national level. He joined OCB as its fourth member in 1974 and for 37 years provided the outstanding eye care OCB has become known for, treating the most advanced problems in glaucoma and operating on complex surgical problems in both cataract and glaucoma patients, before retiring in 2011. Dr. Bellows lectured nationally and internationally on his pioneering clinical research and held academic positions at Harvard and Tufts Universities.

Near and dear to his heart was training future generations of glaucoma specialists, and throughout his entire career, he inspired and mentored numerous glaucoma fellows as well as residents at Harvard, Tufts and Boston University with his clinical and surgical expertise. In displaying his portrait, we are reminded of Dr. Bellows as a role model as we move into the future.
