Dr. Sauer specializes in cataract surgery as well as the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma. He entered medicine and specifically ophthalmology with the goal of helping reduce blindness and improve the quality of life for individuals with glaucoma, cataracts, and other eye conditions. He credits a year spent after college at a charity eye hospital in the Dominican Republic as shaping his life focus.

He graduated with honors from Duke University and went on to complete research fellowships at the NIH in Bethesda, MD at the National Eye Institute and in Lima, Peru at the Fogarty International Center. During medical school, he was selected for the prestigious Sommer Scholar program to attend Johns Hopkins for a masters in public health degree. He went on to ophthalmology residency training at the renowned Stein Eye Institute at UCLA. Dr. Sauer completed his glaucoma fellowship at Tufts New England Eye Center & Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston.

Dr. Sauer is committed to providing cutting edge and compassionate care for his patients. He integrates the latest advancement in the treatment of cataracts and glaucoma with a gentle bedside manner and enjoys collaborating with each patient to tailor their cataract or glaucoma treatment to their specific needs.

He remains actively involved with clinical research (see Research bio) and teaching of glaucoma fellows and Tufts residents. He has published several research articles and book chapters in glaucoma. Additionally, he is committed to advancing eye care domestically and abroad, serving on local committees as well as helping build a training program in Tanzania.

Dr. Sauer grew up in Duxbury, MA.
